...what fun...Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs will open their 1907 Ferryboat for shopping on Wednesday, August 13th. Anyone reading this blog is invited, just mention that you heard about their party here and walk aboard for merriment, great art and the best view of Manhattan you will ever see...

They will offer stupendous sales on their creations, offer tours of their quarters aboard this (the last surviving Ellis Island Ferry) and invite you to enjoy lemonade and live piano music played by Yankee Ferry Crew Member, Brian.

Earth Angels

That's Amore!

My wonderful friend, my assistant, my neighbor, my Shannon...heading off to college! Sniff Sniff...She will leave Warwick in just a few days to attend the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. She will chart her course as a college student studying photography at this prestigious school -- long recognized for the talent it cultivates.

How lucky are we that we've gotten to watch her grow up next door...All of us will miss her being here every day, but we could not be more proud of her...

We seem to like to celebrate in our neighborhood...So I had to share images of this special theme bash. Her family gave her a wonderful send off...Italian style...and invited the neighbors, relatives and the many friends to feast in honor of her many accomplishments, and the promise of those yet to be.

The Gallo-Intoci family made their own backyard celebration a'la the great San Genarro Festival of Little Italy -- but I think, even better! There were booths with food, a mini carnival midway and prizes for the kids, music, lights…and plenty of pasta, garlic, gold jewelry and big hair!

Here's our host Lisa, Shannon's Mom...Her mile high beehive says it all! Actually, I think it suits you, Miz LiLi.

Dom your food, as ever, tops to charts -- my taste buds adore you! You could have fed 300! Poppy Sal and Uncle Mark -- the booth was perfection, Sally, Big Joe -- the tunes were fab! Lisa, Michelle and Grandma Maria…your girl is a special one...and this party was a great celebration in her honor! I know you worked hard to make it wonderful for all of us there...

Laurie and kids, Jacob and Sophie joined in the fun. Laurie, the moon hit my eye like a big pizza pie!

Look at that wonderful present...

There were even fresh zeppoles to go with Sophie's pink hair (Tarina would be sooo jealous!).

We all got a little choked up when Shannon gave her talk...

An evening to remember...

Shannon, I simply would not be where I am today in business, and with the kids, without you. It was my great, good fortune to have found you on your roof all those years ago. I am indebted to you and your wonderfully supportive family for sharing in our lives and allowing me and the Earth Angels artists to be such a “bad” influence on you and your creative talents!

And all of you, who have encountered Shannon through Earth Angels, please join me in wishing her all the very best there is to discover in life and the best of luck in her studies...

Jo Was Here

Jo Packham has surrounded herself with creative women throughout her 30+ year career in publishing, photo styling, crafting and writing. And she just might be one of the most talented, and utterly wonderful, people I know. I am inspired by her hard work, sincere attitude and the competence with which she approaches her projects and achieves her goals.

She first showcased inspiring spaces of creative women (including her own fab studio) in her widely popular hardcover book “Where Women Create”. Since its release in 2005, artful souls have been clamoring for more! Her readers want more inspiring spaces, more creative women’s stories, and more of Jo’s travels and adventures in documenting the glorious cocktail of style, savvy and sheer talent she brews about her. We have sold hundreds of copies of her book at Earth Angels …and it is among my favorite gifts to give artful friends.

To continue and expand upon the glimpses and stories told in her book, November 1st will mark the launch of her current brainchild -- a new magazine called “Where Women Create”. Published in partnership with Stampington, this quarterly publication will be a 144 page visual feast. It will feature artists’ studios and ateliers, along with the home workshops, business suites, and a bevy of glorious venues in which women create their art (not just visual art but performing arts and the fine art of business too!)

I am honored that Jo will include 12 pages on the Earth Angels Secret Lab in her premier issue along with several Earth Angels artists’ spaces in issues to follow! I'm including some images of the lab as it looked when she visited...

Jo feels strongly that sharing the spaces and studios of inspiring women is meaningful to artful souls among us who draw strength and inspiration form kindred spirits. Bravo Jo! I agree! Amazingly, Jo is traveling this country and others to personally attend every photo shoot…

...here we are goofing in the lab. Can you tell we just didn’t have any fun during the shoot…?

Earth Angels will stock this magazine and …rumor has it...Jo will have a special subscription offer that will offer so much more than 4 magazines a year There will be insider goodies, events and special products. The moniker of this little band if insiders is “The Silver Suitcase Society”…stay tuned for more details and email me your name and contact info if you’d like to be on Jo’s mailing list for this group and/or you’d like charter subscription info. I have already told Jo to, “Sign me up!”

Thanks to Jo for the creative muscle and elbow grease to take on this ingenuous project. The depth of my excitement cannot quire be expressed.

getting ahead

I had a few folks e-mail me about my chaos and mess...one reminded me of this post about Dara, so I am re-posting it tonight..it captures my mood as I attempt to sort out, tidy up and get some of those items checked off the to do list!

....Yes, I am forever trying to get ahead just a wee bit...maybe catch up on my daily household chores, keep abreast of my children's assignments and social lives and squeeze in, perhaps 15 minutes, of reading at the end of the long day. When I meet these challenges in good cheer I feel like the "head girl".

My wonderful pal, and Earth Angels artist Dara is often in the same boat. As working Moms, we toss about quips of the day in shared camaraderie of the "to do", "oops, missed" and "to be done" before we make time to sleep a bit before it all starts itself over again. Dara made me this fabulous necklace for Christmas and I wear it merrily as a badge of honor!

We share good humor and a passion for old things. (See the story of how we met in a previous blog post called "...the wrong door".)

The latest batch of Dara's creations take the cake! They sing a sassy song of shared sentiment.

Thanks Dara for melding your literary fascination, with your love of old dolls, metal and the odd object.

Here's Dara at work in her studio...she is much like a mad scientist concocting a brew of findings, word and image.

Dara has amassed a huge colelction of findings, bakelite and doll heads in her 20 years of passionate collecting and creating.

And the award goes to...Dara DiMagno for using her head!

Your work deserve recognition for it's message and your methods are magnificent...earning you your nicknames, "Dara DiFabulous" and "Dara DiMagnificent".

And whenever I am feeling truly overwhlemed, I call Dara and we put our heads together and...well we do what friends do for each other...chat, coach and console....

I Confess A Mess!

I am back from a week away - it was wonderfully refreshing. A great chance to re-charge and re-group (I will BLOG on our trip soon)...

BUT! I have realized...

Summer is slipping by and my "summer projects" for the house have only just begun!

I must confess, I am a mess with half-started clean-ups and sort-outs about. Though well intended and not lacking in motivation, I need to allocate some serious time to resolving this! Help!

What's on the list: tackle the storage issues in the garage, re-paint the mudroom (it's too dark) and make the new laundry room work better, more efficiently, etc. WHEW...!

I started today by sorting, purging, donating and generally letting go of some of the played out toys, out sized snow boots, worn out this and that. The wall above had a pathetic shelf of castoffs...it and it's contents are "gone"...hooray!

You're right, it's a small start, but it might just grant me a tiny foothold in the looming wilderness of chores, and confidence enough to face "the closets"

I will report back soon with some images and my progress...let's say in 2 weeks. And, really, I cannot show too many "before" images; they are too revealing of the utter chaos I am confronting. When you find the phone in the laundry basket and the tape in the cat food, you know things have gone too far!

And so BLOGland pals...Wish me luck. I am equipped with a pile of bins from "Target"...and I am armed with imagination and grit!

Jill Wiener is seeing dots...A fabulous new grouping of her work has arrived and it is mighty spotty!

Fabulously functional and laden with charming detail, Jill’s pieces are pure delight. With deep, delicious glazes and striking forms, they are a perfect marriage of function and whimsy.

Jill works in unexpected color combinations and festive forms. All Earth Girl Pottery is hand-thrown on a wheel in Jill’s Sullivan Country, NY barn/studio. You can visit if you are in the area...

She is as delightful as her work, smart and sassy, with a great sense of humor!

Jill has also just introduced a new line of necklaces and belts…all are delish….
