Little Red Riding Hood Storybook Display
Opens Saturday, October 13
at the National Museum of Play

Grandma and Red Riding Hood

My,what big eyes you have! The better to visit the Little Red Riding Hood storybook display opening Saturday, October 13 at the Natonal Museum of Play at The Strong®. The tale of the little girl in the red cape who meets a very hungry wolf springs to life in a three-dimensional display based on artist Nancy Wiley’s new, lavishly illustrated version of the classic fairy tale.

On view are Wiley’s
whimsical, hand-crafted dolls and the hand-painted scenery and backdrops she used as stage sets for her book’s vibrant photo illustrations. Photo enlargements from the pages of Wiley’s book (pictured at right) are also featured; and unique fairy-tale items from the museum’s renowned collections, including historic versions of Little Red Riding Hood, complement the display.

On Saturday, October 13, enjoy the following Little Red Riding Hood events:
  • Meet the Author: Meet Wiley, get her autograph, and enjoy short videos documenting the book’s creation process from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Copies of Wiley’s book will be available for purchase in the museum’s Everything for Play! shop. (Wiley returns for a second appearance on Monday, November 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
  • Imaginative Theater Play: Kids can pretend to journey through the woods to Grandmother’s house by participating in Little Red Riding Hood skits led by museum staff at 11 a.m., noon, and
1 p.m. Or, grab a cape, picnic basket, hunter’s vest and other colorful costumes and act out the tale using puppets in the museum’s Kid to Kid theater.
  • Paper-Doll Making: Embellish your own Red Riding Hood or Wolf paper dolls (designed by the author).

The Little Red Riding Hood storybook display remains on view through January 5, 2013.

Monday–Thursday, 10  - 5
Friday and Saturday, 10 - 8
Sunday, noon - 5

I sure wish I could be there for your event....
Wishing you good luck on the 13th and in your on-going display Nancy.

xxoo Jen

I'm excited to hear about the exhibit and hope to check it out when I'm home for the holidays. It's so much fun to see someone from back home in the spotlight doing such beautiful work!
