...my column is on the newsstands...are you an Artful Entrepreneur???

...many of you don't know that my formal training is in Urban Planning -- yep -- even have the Masters and the Professional License (AICP) --
but that may not seem to match with what I do everyday with Earth Angels Studios...

But it does! It does!  Why???
My specialization in Planning is in small business economic development... that means, I know how to help business grow through garnering sales, how they market and how they position themselves within the economy as makers and manufacturers...

So now -- instead of working with food and fashion liked I used to in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn when I lived in Queens -- I work with handmade and have since I started my dabbling in 1994 as a hobby business...

I went full time into Earth Angels in 2000 when I had my first kiddo and have not looked back....

Soooo it' really nice for me to have the opportunity to come full-circle and share my business development know-how in a four part series called

"Paying the Bills with Your Passion"

A huge thanks to Jo Packham of
for the opportunity to write this new column on artful entrepreneur....

Part I is on how to turn a hobby business
(yes, just like I did) into a legitimate one...with research and evaluation of the market and your goods!

You can read the entire article in the July issue...

....and the October Issue has just hit the newsstands with Part II  of my column -- more on that soon

...and hope you can catch these pieces if they are relevant to you as you start or grow your own handmade business....

BLYTHE -- quick question answered in images!

I was recently on the phone with an old friend and long time, passionate doll collector....HI MAGGIE!

...she had never really looked at Blythe and the realm of custom Blythe dolls...
and she was not sure what all the fuss was about!

So, I thought I would quickly post a few images here that came up on a google search -- some before and after customization pics -- that I had sent along to her... (sorry, I cannot credit the 3 images to follow to the photographers, if these are your shots -- let me know so I can!)
Anyway....here are these same images to show you -- in just a few pics --
what the artists who customize do...

they sand, and carve, and paint, adding custom eye chips, gaze correction and more..

I am astounded at what they do to a base/stock doll...Maggie was too...there is a lot going on here in the realm of Blythe that deserves attention and celebration!

Thanks to all of the custom artists for applying their talents to the medium of Blythe...

AND if you want to be kept in the loop on all Blythe customs as they arrive from the artists' studios, just
t email me at Jen@EarthAngelsStudios.com

I am smitten with the many faces of Blythe and hope -- even if she's not your thing -- you can appreciate what the artists do...

...some thing new from Eliza....

A sweet treat of a new book is on the shelf...
Congrats to Christie Jones Ray on her new title...
Eliza at Rose Water Cottage

Grammy and Eliza prepare for a move to a tiny Victorian, Rose Water Cottage. How will she fit in, in the city, after living in the country. Grammy eases her anxious mind, and says, "You may be a Cottage Mouse. We will have a garden of lovely flowers, enjoy our tea sets and tea parties...and All will be Well."

I love to peek at artists while they work...
Christie's illustration, calligraphy and
story telling just send me...

She's a true friend and that makes it even more wonderful to be a part of her artful business journey...
Stay tuned to hear more about Christie and
her Eliza the Mouse...I love them both!
...more titles are in work featuring an ever enlarging cast of characters from the
heart and mind of Christie...

You'll meet
"Sugarlump" a wee mohair party pup
created by Letty Worley...
"Rosebud" a middie Blythe custom dollie
AND Lula Kate (stay tuned for many images)
a sweet Blythe from Italy created by Cecilia Fioravanti of Jolly Roger Dolls...

I love that Christie invites us into her world and shares her style...

Thanks Christie for doing what you do...
it's a treat to work with you!

You can find all of Christie's books and creations

woo hoo Lucy! Congrats on piece in WWC

I am long overdue in saying a hearty congrats to LUCY her fab piece that appeared recently in Where Women Create magazine...

The days are escaping me, no the MONTHS are escaping me, and it seems like a forever ago that I met Lucy via phone when she reached out for business development assistance...

Her salvage business and re-purposed jewelry line were developing in multiple directions and she needed to focus, make some tough decisions and move forward in the right direction...

She surely has!
Love that she has made such great strides and loved that I could help celebrate this in print!
...Lucy has done incredibly things in sharing her style and her work goes so far beyond creating wearable art for her business, "Lucy's Inspired"

It was great to be able to dedicate my column -- "The Business of the Studio" -- to Lucy!

Her "Inspired to Give" project is explored in the article in depth and this brings me joy...hope you can read more about it in the magazine...
Thanks Jo Packham for the opportunity to celebrate Lucy and her artful entrepreneurship...

You can see more of Lucy's creations on our site...

Thanks Lucy...it's a treat to work with you
...and an honor to know you...

...so little and SOOOO BIG...Welcome Christie Jones Ray

Eliza the Mouse is a tiny little friend
from Rose Water Cottage in Franklin, TN
She is small and sweet, but she has some very big stories to share with all of us...

But it's a very big deal that Christie Jones Ray -- her creator -- has joined the ranks of our Earth Angels Featured Artists...

Welcome Christie!!
xxoo
Christie is an exuberant and sweet, author/illustrator I met just more than a year ago in Round Top, TX...
She has a dozen books celebrating the adventures of her Eliza the Mouse and her friends Sugar Lump, Baby Mouse and Rosebud...
Her work is lovely and gentle...
it makes me want to pause to celebrate the little things, the everyday things, that add kindness and beauty to your days...
Welcome Christie...
You can see her creations HERE

Each book is laden with lush illustrations and Christie's artful calligraphy...

 ...my current favorite title...
 ...but I love them all...

And I will be sharing more news on Christie's expanding adventures with
Eliza AND with Earth Angels...

It's both an honor and a pleasure to do business with Christie and to celebrate her story and style!

...HAPPY EASTER...and SPRING is finally here...

Happy Spring...it finally feels like it is really here!!!
all that snow in March just held winter over a few extra weeks here in New York...

...but I can see the daffodils coming up, forcing their happy, yellow color around the yard...so yes, SPRING is here and with it...EASTER!

I hope the new season is filled with glad days and good memories...

I've been enjoying a few days off with the kiddos and it has recharged my batteries...

The season feel fresh and happy...
and full of promise...so I am excited that Easter will arrive this weekend and give us a chance to be together.
I love celebrating Easter with the family...

...and I will share a peek at that soon.

I am cooking for us and
I'll be decorating the table in all the colors of the season...with bunnies, and paper grass and wee CHICKS galore...

Speaking of chicks....I love antique postcards...
here's a peek at some of my Easter-tide faves...

So Happy Easter...Happy Spring...
enjoy the new season, however you celebrate it!
