boys will be boys

I've learned that boys will be boys, but I was willing to give it a go. As we made plans to re do and expand the boys' room by converting an unfinished "bonus room"/attic-like crawl space to additional bedroom space, I thought I would try to involve my 6 and 1o year old sons in decorating their room.

While I suspect they may have been more motivated by the accessibility of their toy storage bins than the placement of the furniture and bedding, including them in the process made this room truly theirs.
Working within a budget we used all re-purposed and found (yes, truly found as one of the almost matching desks came out of the garbage...) furniture, we managed a space for them that offers open play area, and plenty of tucked away bins for toys ad the next season's or sized clothes...

Like so many of us who love our homes, they welcomed the chance to have some of their favorite things around them...and these things -- in color and texture -- became the palette for the room...

More shots of the space and the how to will follow in a 2012 issue of one of my fave magsCottages & Bungalows, but I had to share a peek at some of my fave nooks...and objects in their space...

The resulting space is one they use and love, play in and yes, decorate...occasionally with dirty socks, and always with those bits of Legos...

...and I can vouch for anyone out there, there is simply nothing more painful than stepping on one of them in the middle of the night in bare feet...
