Jennifer Lanne paints what she knows...flora, fauna and farm. Our visit to her home and studio reminded me just how much my friend loves her gardens, their animals, and the work that has led a winding path to her farmhouse door.
This annual late-summer visit to the Lanne's tops the kids' list for "our favorite thing we did all summer!" (yes, this beats out Disney, they confess...) This is a big playground with giant pigs, an enormous antique tractor, a working forge, apples to pick, chickens to feed and a real working outhouse.
Beloved pet pigs, Olive and Violet, have their own fan club of sorts...their shed fronts on a road that many bikers ride and walkers
stroll. Often Jennifer and her hubby, Dick encounter folks chatting up their porcine princesses at the gate...
Here's Rory at the back of the barn....see the painting at the top of the blog for a similar view...yes, the chickens are afoot!
Of course the kids need to see the animals and farm machines first, but I soon wandered indoors to their c.1760 home. Layers of treasures encrust the rooms in Jennifer's inimitable style. She moves her displays to suit her mood and arranges new vignettes...it's a joy to explore.
Here birds guard watch faces and washbasins....
Jennifer nabbed this horse on a visit to Warwick's antique shops...a great find.
...she adores cows and has an ever growing herd of old toys and bovine ephemera...
They just removed the old stove and have a new counter in work...
...and now we step into her studio...I want to move right in...
Jennifer works at an old enamel-topped table, propped on one of her favorite stools...
...some of her latest pieces keep company in a studio corner...
...I love to see her work...brave strokes and drenched in color, her paintings tell of happy days, good memories and vistas filled with the possibilities of an afternoon in the country. Jennifer’s creations allow our imagination to take over where her last brushstroke left the canvas.
...here nature mixes with paintings and found vintage oddities...
This is a the view from her studio window...like so many of her paintings...I could look at it forever.
